Initial Mammography Training Courses

About the Course

The AQI/MTMI Initial Mammography Training course is a comprehensive 4 or 5 day mammography training course that covers all aspects pertaining to initial mammography training for radiologic technologists interested in crossing over into mammography.

The 4-day course, approved for 32 hours of Category A credit, is designed to provide attendees with the initial training necessary to fulfill the requirements set forth by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and is an excellent resource for technologists intending to take the ARRT  Mammography registry in the near future.

The 5-day course, approved for 40 hours of Category A credit, is designed to provide attendees with the initial training necessary to fulfill the requirements set forth by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and also meets the requirements set forth by the MQSA for initial training in digital mammography.  This 5-day course is recommended to meet State of California mammography training requirements.

Students may attend the full field digital day of the course (the 5th day) by itself. This day will provide 8 hours of credit for digital mammography training which is required by MQSA before operating digital mammography units.

Who Should Attend 5-Day Course

Any radiologic technologist who is looking to meet the requirements set forth by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) for initial training in mammography and has not yet had their MQSA mandated 8-Hour Digital Mammography Course.

Who Should Attend 4-Day Course

Any radiologic technologist who is looking to meet the requirements set forth by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) for initial training in mammography and has already attended their MQSA mandated 8-Hour Digital Mammography Course.

Course Credit

The 5 day course includes instruction on full field digital mammography to provide attendees with the initial training required by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA). The 5 day course provides 40 hours of Category A credit. Attendees must attend the entire conference to earn the 40 hours of Category A credit.

The 4 day course has been approved by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) for 32 hours of Category A credit in initial mammography training requirements.

Partial credit will not be given.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Obtain knowledge to help prepare fo the ARRT Mammography exam.
  • Demonstrate basic positioning skills for the CC and MLO views.
  • Explain advanced positioning technique for supplementary views, difficult patients and implant patients.
  • Review and gain knowledge on breast anatomy, disease processes and pathology.
  • Describe how various physical characteristics of the x-ray tube affect mammographic imaging.
  • Perform mammographic quality control testing procedures per MQSA guidelines.
  • Describe the differences between imaging systems used to perform Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) examinations.
  • Describe and develop a comprehensive quality assurance program for digital mammography.
  • Understand the differences between regulatory bodies, such as MQSA, ACR and the ARRT.
